A Note From Jay
To all concerned members of our school community... The events of the past few days have been a bit unsettling for us all. We have so appreciated the words of support and encouragement. My hope with this letter is to lend some clarity to the situation and to offer you a glimpse of what may lie ahead.
The reality of our situation is that ROC did make the list of underperforming schools compiled by the Minnesota Department of Education. The two areas cited are lack of proficiency on State tests (MCA) and the inability of our students to graduate on time. As troubling as it may be to make this list, the criteria is accurate.
This is what I told the kids on Thursday morning. Our response to making the list must not be to get angry… it must be to get better. Over the past 17 years, ROC has become a viable and respected item on the "educational menu" of Rochester. Not any one of us has made that happen. It has been the collective good that each of us contribute each day that has created the school we know. We must now rely on that same collective good to embrace this new opportunity we face. Continue to do the things you do to contribute to our success…and then do it just a little bit better and WE will be better.
To our families and community partners, I ask for your patience and understanding. I spoke with the Department Thursday night and will continue that dialogue over the next few weeks. I have invited them to make a site visit in the next month so they can observe this amazing place for themselves. At that time I will ask groups of students, parents, alumni, faculty and community partners to meet with the Department staff to share your ROC stories. As this plan gains substance, I will use our website (rocchs.org) to update progress and contact those of you who have offered assistance.
To our kids. Regardless of what you may hear…it's not WHEN you graduate, it's THAT you graduate. You are the reason we do what we do, you are the reason we love what we do.
Jay
